Maybe setting version number to '-RC' (without candidate number)? We're entering the code freeze anyway, so the state of the branch *is* a candidate for the release.
Now that review period for this patch has passed, and it would generally be a good time to switch away from beta -mode, there's two new patches in queue (#43711, #43713), so the current code *isn't* a release candidate.
Well, maybe it's better to push the patch sooner than later, and not be overly-pedantic of the meaning of the version number string.
I think we should test S3_0 in stable release mode before the actual RC1 release, to avoid surprises when we toggle the beta mode off for the release.
